Self is an abstract exploration of identity formed in the tension between clarity and disorder. Layers of earthy neutrals, deep browns, and muted creams are disrupted by bold strokes of crimson, creating a visual dialogue between calm introspection and the turbulence of lived experience. The fragmented shapes and textured surfaces evoke memories that surface and recede—some sharply defined, others softened by time.
At the centre of the composition, softer, flesh-toned forms hint at the human presence: vulnerable, imperfect, and in transformation. These forms feel both obscured and revealed, as though peeling back layers of selfhood constructed through culture, personal history, and the emotional residue of past events. The chaotic brushwork surrounding them symbolises the external forces—noise, expectation, tradition, and change—that continually shape and distort identity.
In Self, chaos is not merely backdrop but collaborator. The interplay of structure and disorder reflects the way identity is forged: never linear, often messy, yet always deeply personal. This piece invites the viewer to consider the fragments that make up their own narrative and the beauty that emerges from navigating one’s place within—and against—the surrounding world.
Layered textures and contrasting tones evoke the interplay of culture, memory, and personal history, revealing a figure emerging—partially obscured, partially revealed—amidst the surrounding chaos.
